Bruce Highway Road Operations Improvement Project

Scope:

The Bruce Highway Road Operations Improvement Project’s objective was to deliver shared situational awareness on the Bruce Highway. This was done by enabling improved monitoring to identify crashes, landslips, floods and other blockages on road sections and then providing real-time traveller information on electronic signs at key decision points. Low cost, low power and low bandwidth technologies were selected to suit the remote locations.

The project was delivered as part of TMR’s Bruce Highway Upgrade Program to support the program’s objective of improving safety outcomes on the 1,677 km Bruce Highway corridor connecting Brisbane to Cairns.

Key Activities:

Our prior work in 2016-17 included development of a Needs Analysis, Concept of Operations, and cost models and assistance with the TMR approval process to secure Federal Government funding on the basis of an approved Project Proposal Report (PPR). Integrate then supported the following tasks:

  • System Architecture & Design: Defined system architecture options including AWS integration; developed TOGAF documentation; implemented a Proof of Concept trial in northern Queensland; reviewed TMR’s specifications for rural environments; and provided input to designers for STREAMS and Addinsight software enhancements.
  • Data Management & Configuration: Managed data configuration and entry for Addinsight, STREAMS, and TMR’s ITS Asset Register, ROAR; developed Excel tools for bulk data uploads for Addinsight and STREAMS, using its Modbus interface; facilitated data sharing protocols with the Bureau of Meteorology; and managed, tracked and updated Bluetooth device data for 169 deployed units.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Consulted with freight industry representatives, Engineering & Technology branches, and TMR Districts to identify operational priorities; led Project Reference Group meetings and maintained ongoing district engagement.
  • Project Management & Delivery: supported the project managers; assisted with procurement documentation; developed commissioning checklists; oversaw the software delivery; and produced Benefits Realisation and Lessons Learnt reports.
Outcome:

System delivery was completed successfully with useful functionality provided in STREAMS and Addinsight to support the hardware deployment.
