Scope:

Development of a Concept of Operations for Old Gympie Road. This key transport corridor required planning for consistent and efficient delivery of targeted Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) treatments through a series of intersections. The ConOps included a technology review and rollout model to support the upgrade of the corridor, catering for predicted future traffic demands (3% estimated growth rate) and emerging uses for the local waste facility and schools as well as active transport facilities.

Key Activities:
  • Site visit: Assessment of typical daytime traffic conditions, spatial constraints and priority areas requiring treatments.
  • Context: Review of objectives and current/ planned infrastructure and technology provision for the corridor as well as assessment of the current control software.
  • Design Review: Reviewed existing design documentation considering ITS and traffic engineering requirements; assessed existing ITS hardware, software, and backbone ITS services and provided feedback to improve coordination of communications infrastructure and operations for the corridor.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Conducted stakeholder interviews to determine mandatory and desirable requirements for defining objectives that ITS treatments need to support.
  • Needs Assessment: Developed a high-level needs assessment identifying key requirements including improved safety and efficiency, provision of operational data, support for active transport and better management of school access as well as future proofing for C-ITS and EVs.
  • Corridor Support: Supported infrastructure improvements including widening to four lanes total, installation of new traffic signals at 10 key intersections, footpaths, bicycle lanes, street lighting, bus stop upgrades, and drainage improvements.
  • Operational impacts: considered multiple Operational scenarios for the corridor, in the context of various user types such as traffic managers, freight operators and public transport passengers.
Outcome:

The project delivered a comprehensive technology review and ITS rollout plan for the corridor to ensure the corridor future proofed for projected traffic volumes and emerging transportation technologies.
